The grapes for all of our wines are estate grown in our Peterson Vineyard or higher elevation Cortada Alta Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) appellation. Now over 15 years into our dream project, we are very pleased to welcome fruit from the newly planted Cortada Alta Vineyard into the mix and bring to fruition another limited production bottling.
All of our wines are handcrafted by renowned winemaker Ed Kurtzman at the winery facility in San Francisco we share with August West.
The 2016 Peterson Vineyard pinot noir contains a mix of all 5 clones planted in the vineyard (828, Pommard (05), 667, 777, and 115). The wine was aged in French oak (70% new) for 15 months before bottling. Garnet color with a deep violet core, the nose brings intense aromas of strawberry compote, rhubarb, winter spices, forest floor and cardamom. Ultra fine tannins frame the palate around flavors of lavender, high-toned wild berries and savory game. Well-balanced acidity brings the dense core of opulent fruit into focus on the finish. This wine will drink well from 2019 through 2025.
The 2016 Cortada Alta Vineyard pinot contains a mix of 828, Pommard (05), 667, 23, and Swan clones and was aged in French oak (50% new) for 15 months before bottling. This wine shows its high altitude location with a nose of bright berry fruit and ripe plums, and a deeper color than what we typically see from the Peterson Vineyard pinots. The texture of the Cortada Alta is extravagant, due to the extra hang time and ripening this vineyard sees. The lush body and richness leads to a long, balanced finish. This wine should be at its best from 2019 through 2024.
The 2016 SLH pinot is reminiscent of our very popular 2012 SLH pinot with a nose of floral notes, ripe berries and dried herbs all playing off each other in fragrant harmony. The wine was aged in French oak (25% new) for 15 months before bottling. With Cortada Alta fruit now in the mix, there's also a darker berry aspect to the aromas as well. Soft and rich on the palate, the typically tart Peterson fruit is balanced out nicely by the more opulent Cortada Alta fruit. This wine is already drinking well, and should continue to improve through 2023.
The 2016 Peterson Vineyard chardonnay shows a combination of stone fruits and subtle hazelnuts on the nose and is much more subdued than many SLH chardonnays that show more passion fruit and pineapple. The wine was aged in French oak (50% new) for 15 months before bottling. The palate exhibits a nice balance between apples, pears, moderate acidity and toasty oak, with no one trait dominating the others. This wine is drinking well now, but should be at its best between 2019 and 2021.
The 2016 SLH chardonnay was aged in a one year old French oak barrel for 15 months before bottling. The Santa Lucia Highlands influence over the Chardonnays from both the Cortada Alta and the Peterson Vineyards is apparent in the nose. Tropical fruit flavors dominate the aromas, with passion fruit, pineapple and a hint of French oak. Acidity is the key word on the palate, at least while this Chardonnay is in its youth. There's also a rich fruitiness to balance out the crisp apple tartness. Give this chardonnay until late 2018 to open up and reveal its full self. It should drink well through at least 2020.
